Why Your Best Ideas Will Come At The Weekend
Your most inspirational thoughts, your best ideas, plans and strategies, will probably come to you at the weekend, on holiday, or in your leisure time.
If you are in a job, or self-employed, you will no doubt spend a part of your working day thinking about business plans, strategies, or just plain problem solving. How can you attract more customers? How will you best market a product or service? How will you increase your profit margins? What innovation can you introduce to your business? How can you work more efficiently to create more time away from work?
The fact is that our brains spend a good part of our working day attempting to problem solve, sometimes successfully, but often not. In the work environment, people invariably attempt to multi-task (both physically and mentally). Firstly, multi-tasking is a myth. We don’t do it successfully (men or women), even though we may convince ourselves that we do, and quality of thought is compromised as we steer closer to information overload. And this applies in whatever your work environment may be; your office, your car, or your home if you conduct your business from there.
Environment plays an enormous part in the way we think. Not just the physical environment, but also the psychological environment created by time and expectation. When we are outside of our workplace environment (whatever that may be for us individually), we feel different. There is far less pressure. We have more available time and there is less expectation of us. We feel safer, and this allows us to be more relaxed.
Leisure helps pull us further into this ‘safety zone’ and relax that bit more. Leisure may be a round of golf, a workout at the gym or being on holiday with family. It’s during these periods that we enjoy most of our inspiration, most of our creative ideas. Thoughts and ideas and solutions that wouldn’t have occurred to us in the busy, distracting and often stressful working environment.
Capture those thoughts and ideas. Store those solutions away. Write them down if you want to. And take them back to the work environment with you. They will be some of the most valuable you will ever have.
