10 Inspiring Quotes From The Great Muhammad Ali
For me, Muhammad Ali is and always will be the greatest of all time, not just as a boxer, but as a human being. World heavyweight boxing champion, social activist, humanitarian and philanthropist, Muhammad Ali became, and remains, one of the most identifiable figures in history.
Born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Kentucky USA, in 1942, Ali won an Olympic gold medal in 1960, followed four years later by his first world heavyweight title.
Outspoken in his contempt for the Vietnam War, he refused to serve in the military and in 1967 was arrested and stripped of both his world title and boxing license.
Muhammad Ali returned to the ring in 1970 and the following year fought (and was outpointed by) Joe Frazier in what is still widely thought of as the ‘Fight of the Century’. Ali was to be involved in two more of history’s greatest fights; the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in 1974 in which he defeated a younger and much stronger George Foreman, and the ‘Thriller in Manila’ in 1974, in which Ali defeated his old foe Frazier.
At the time of his retirement in 1981, Muhammad Ali had held the world heavyweight boxing title three times.
Throughout his retirement, and despite battling the progressive Parkinson’s disease, Ali dedicated his time to philanthropy, in particular travelling the world to raise awareness of poverty and inequality around the globe.
Muhammad Ali passed away in June 2016. He was my hero. I loved him as if I had known him personally, a remarkable effect him seemed to have on so many others around the world and through the decades. He was, and remains, the Greatest Of All Time!
The following are some of my favourite Muhammad Ali quotes, which I hope will inspire you as much as they continue to do me.

“I know where I’m going and I know the truth, and I don’t have to be what you want me to be. I’m free to be what I want.”
“What keeps me going is goals.”
“It’s lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself.”
“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.”
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”
“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.”
“I’ve made my share of mistakes along the way, but if I have changed even one life for the better, I haven’t lived in vain.”
