The ‘traditional economy’ is disappearing at an unprecedented rate and with it, the millions of traditional jobs that have previously offered stability and security for the majority of the world’s workforce.
If you number amongst that majority, if you’re still dressing every morning in your suit or work clothes before embarking on your tiresome daily commute to the office, factory or plant, then here’s something you need to consider.
By 2035, 50% of all existing jobs, worldwide, will no longer require people!
And here’s something else you should think about…
A friend called on me at home the other day for coffee and a chat about business. It was around 1.00 in the afternoon and I’d been working since around 9.30am, after talking my children to school. I’d written some website content, exchanged a few emails, updated my social media pages and made a coaching call to a new student.
The point is that, at 1.00 in the afternoon, I was still wearing my pyjamas and a bathrobe.
Now all this was much to the amusement of my friend who, on entering my home, commented that I looked rather like Hugh Hefner strolling around in the Playboy Mansion.
It should, however, be noted that, in the absence of a blonde Playboy model clinging affectionately to each arm, the similarity abruptly ended there.
But the nub of this anecdote is, that the reason I was still wearing my bathrobe at 1.00pm, was because I could!
There is a rapidly growing number of people globally that are successfully making a sustainable living using nothing more than a laptop and an Internet connection. These people have no mandatory dress code. And they don’t spend seemingly endless hours on public transport or in traffic jams, because they have nowhere to commute to and from. These people have the freedom and flexibility to work when they choose and from whatever location they choose.
These people are living their lives by design and not by default!
Now it should be stressed that I don’t work in a bathrobe everyday and neither would I recommend doing so. How you dress can play an important part in your approach to your work and how professionally you perform it. But, along with the millions of new ‘digital entrepreneurs’ around the world, I do have the freedom to make my own choices.
Thanks to the rise of the new ‘digital economy’, you too now have a choice. And you no longer need to be a Hugh Hefner to make money in your bathrobe!
